OPERATION HIGH JUMP 1946/1947

History of the German Neu-Schwabenland military bases

In 1936, it became obvious for the Nazi Germany that a second worldwide conflict would require a well developed maritime logistics. In spite of well established political bonds with some South American countries in the matter of base supplying, the Germans needed a secret, secluded, unassailable base for the Kriegsmarine submarines.

In 1938, the German aircraft carrier "Neu-Schwabenland" headed toward the  Antartica "South pole" in order to find a suitable area.

The aircraft carrier reached an area with the following coordinates comprised between latitude 69° 10`N and 76° 30' N and longitude 11° 30 W and 20° E 00` in Queen Maud Land being administered as a Norwegian dependent territory under the Antartic treaty system.

The germans putted their hands on 600 000 square kilometers of land and named it  "Neues-Schwabenland".

Submarines flotilla went secretely in this unsuspected territory. The german submarines were able to travel unnoticed to great distances  without surfacing due to their ingenious system the "Schnorkel"...

In the latest improvement of the "Schnorkel" :

The twin periscopic pipes of the earlier models of U Boot were replaced by a single rigid tube which could, by pivoting at its base, be lowered into a well in the deck casing (see the picture below) Still fitted with a floating ball cut-off valve, the schnorkel proved tricky in operation. In all but the calmest seas, a seaman had to be detailed to watch the schnorkel, as the diesels had to be shut off whenever the valve closed. If they were allowed to run on for even a few seconds the diesels could pull oxygen out of the boat?s atmosphere, causing severe decompression with accompanying ear and breathing difficulties. Burst eardrums were common. The only way to maintain more or less continuous operation of the diesels was to limit a snorkelling U-boat to 6 kts (1 ½ kts slower than it could move on its electric drive). While the snorkel did offer a U-boat great immunity from Allied anti-submarine measures, it turned it into a slow, blind, largely ineffective weapon. Here the loss of three years of planning and development was most keenly felt. Only now were plans being made to produce, in the type XXI, a boat that could truly take advantage of the potential of the schnorkel. The type XXI went to sea with a vastly improved schnorkel. Being periscopic, it was designed to run higher above the water, giving much better rough water performance. Also, it was fitted with an automatic shut-off switch that solved the diesel run-on problem. With these improvements, the type XXI could schnorkel safely at 12 kts.

At the end of WWII, the US Navy along with the Royal Navy upon a thourough review of the kriegsmarine flotilla came to the conclusion that an estimated number of 40 U Boot of the last generation, U-21 and U-23 were missing? They were not sank during military operation, scuttled, seized nor boarded by allied forces...

Then, probably,  the question mark raised up...Where were they?

Since the establishment of Neu-Schwabenland, many bases were scattered in the territory as depicted by the authentical map shown by clicking on the link below.

NEU-SCHWABENLAND TERRITORY

The german scientists were undoubtly in advance on their time and were involved in researches on new type of propulsion devices far ahead of the technology of the allied forces...Hitler was probably aware of the fact that the allied forces would overpower the axe forces before the final completion and commissioning of their technology, therefore it would make sense that highly technological units were disassembled and secretely embarked on board U boot (such as the latest generations U-21 & U-23 submarines) for Neu-Schwabenland where those devices were assembled again, in secret, well protected underground bases.

 The Operation High Jump

The official purposes of the operation High Jump were :

  1. to train personnel and to test material in the frigid zone
  2. to consolidate and to extend American sovereignty over the largest practical area of the Antarctic continent
  3. to determine the feasibility of establishing and maintaining bases in the Antarctic and to investigate possible base sites
  4. to develop techniques for establishing and maintaining air bases on the ice, (with particular attention to the later applicability of such techniques to Greenland)
  5. to amplify existing knowledge of hydrographic, geographic, geological, meteorological and electromagnetic conditions in the area
  6. supplementary objectives of the Nanook expedition ( a smaller equivalent conducted off eastern Greenland)

The operation "High Jump" was a United States Navy operation organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, officer in charge, Task Force 68  and led by Rear Admiral Richard H. Cruzen, commanding officer, Task Force 68.

The operation started in 26th of August 1946 and ended abruptly in late February 1947, six months earlier than previously planned.

Task Force 68 included 4700 men, 13 ships and 26 airplanes (from other sources, unaccounted number of airplanes ?). The primary mission was to establish the Antarctica research base Little America.

In accordance to the official purposes of Operation High Jump, it make sense that ice breakers, communication ship, seaplane tenders and supply ships were necessary however it seems dubious that an Aircraft carrier such as the USS Philippine sea, destroyers and a submarine were essential for the survey of Antartica?

Let make it clear that an armada of that lenght, in my opinion, was set for other means than what it was officially meant to be...

 The Operation went wrong ?
